Roles and Characters

...

Civilian

Character: Civilian

The Civilian is the foundation of the game. They form the majority and participate in collective decision‑making. A Civilian has no special abilities — only observation, logic, and speech. Their strength lies in clear thinking and the ability to doubt at the right moment. Their task is to identify the Mafia through analyzing behavior, contradictions, and voting patterns.

At night, they sleep. During the day, they try to find the Mafia and vote against those they believe to be Mafia members.

Goal: Find and eliminate the Mafia through voting.

...

Kind Soul

Character: Civilian

A very good and kind citizen, playing for the Civilians.

Passive role: Has lifelong immunity from daytime voting. After the town votes against them, they reveal their card and do not die. Because of this, the Mafia hates them. Most likely, the Mafia will kill them on the first night as soon as they discover their kindness.

Goal: Their personal victory is to receive votes during the day and “sacrifice” that vote in favor of the Civilians.

Clown

Clown

Character: Civilian

A very gloomy, sad and apathetic character. His life is heavy and full of sorrow.

Passive ability: He is immune to being killed by the Maniac. If the Maniac attacks him, he reveals his card and survives. He continues to play as a Civilian and may (quite soon) be killed by the Mafia. If the Civilians execute the Maniac during daytime voting while the Clown’s identity is still hidden, then starting from the next night the Clown becomes the new Maniac.

Goal: His personal victory is to become the Maniac.

...

Priest

Character: Civilian

A completely innocent player. The Civilians should feel ashamed if they choose to execute the Priest during daytime voting.

Passive role: If the Priest dies as a result of daytime voting, they give a final speech and reveal their card. Their death triggers an additional vote on the same day. This gives the Civilians a small extra chance to realize their mistake. Just try not to kill another innocent person.

Goal: In case of death — give the Civilians a chance to make the right choice.

...

Soldier

Character: Civilian

The bravest of all Civilians.

Passive role: If the Mafia kills the Soldier at night, he does not go down without a fight. After the Soldier’s death is announced, a short night is declared, everyone closes their eyes, and the Soldier attempts to find and kill a Mafia member. If the Soldier points to a Mafia player — that Mafia member leaves the game together with the Soldier.

Goal: Personal victory — by dying at the hands of the Mafia, gain an extra shot for the Civilians, find and eliminate a Mafia member.

...

Mafia Don

Character: Mafia
The main villain. As long as he is alive, only he makes the final decision about whom the Mafia kills at night. The other Mafia players only suggest potential victims.

During the day, he plays like a regular Mafia member.

If the Mafia Don dies, decisions are made collectively, and ALL Mafia members must point to the same victim. If no consensus is reached, the Host decides that the night passes without a Mafia kill.

Goal: Mafia victory

...

Mafia

Character: Mafia

A regular Mafia member. At night participates in discussing potential victims; during the day participates in voting and tries to deflect suspicion. Accuses and votes against Civilians. To gain the trust of Civilians, it is also acceptable to vote against other Mafia members.

Goal: Mafia victory

...

Spy

Character: Mafia
Plays for the Mafia. On the first night, meets the Mafia, but the Mafia does not know who the Spy is. During the introduction, Mafia members raise a finger with their eyes closed so the Spy can identify them.

On the second night, the Host informs the Spy who the Detective is.

Otherwise, the Spy plays as a Civilian but in the Mafia’s interest. Does not wake up at night. Can be killed by the Mafia at night like any other Civilian.

If all Mafia members are eliminated, the Spy begins waking up at night and choosing the Mafia’s victim.

Goal: Mafia victory. Survive. Make the Mafia understand who the Spy is.

...

Terrorist

Character: Mafia
Plays as a regular Mafia member. If killed by the Detective or during daytime voting — reveals their card and engages in a final duel with the Doctor (if the Doctor is still alive).

A short night is declared, during which the Terrorist chooses a victim among the Civilians. Then the Doctor wakes up and attempts to save the victim.

If the Doctor guesses incorrectly — the victim leaves the game together with the Terrorist.

Goal: Mafia victory

...

Doctor

Character: Civilian

The Doctor wakes up at night after the Mafia’s action and tries to guess whom the Mafia targeted. If the guess is correct — the Mafia’s victim is saved and does not die. During the day, plays as a regular Civilian.

The Doctor may also choose themselves, but cannot do so two nights in a row.

Goal: Protect Civilians from being killed by the Mafia.

...

Detective

Character: Civilian

The Detective is the main threat to the Mafia. Conducts their own police investigation. Wakes up at night and tries to find a Mafia member. If successful, kills the Mafia player. During the day, plays as a regular Civilian.

Can kill only Mafia members or the Mafia Don. Does not have the right to a final word.

Goal: Eliminate the Mafia and secure victory for the Civilians.

...

Escort

Character: Civilian

Despite her ambiguous social role, she is a complex and interesting character. Wakes up at night and chooses whom she will spend the night with. The Escort plays for the Civilians, so she does not know who is Mafia and who is Civilian, and may choose anyone. During the day, she plays as a regular Civilian.

If the results of the next day’s voting point to the player whom the Escort chose during the night — the vote is canceled. Regardless of whether the chosen player is Mafia or Civilian, their role is not revealed; it is considered that they have an alibi.

May choose anyone except herself.

Goal: Provide an alibi to unjustly accused Civilians. Personal mistake: saving a Mafia member from daytime voting.

...

Journalist

Character: Civilian

Seeks the truth. Knows the truth. Wakes up at night and tries to find the Mafia. Unlike the Detective, cannot kill — only checks.

Must hide the fact that he knows who the Mafia is if he wants to survive. Must carefully manipulate public opinion.

However, sometimes he may put the interests of the Civilians above his own and reveal the results of his investigations. The key is to do it at the right moment — otherwise he may not make it in time. Like the Detective, he does not have the right to a final word.

Goal: Deliver a decisive blow to the Mafia by revealing his dossier to the Civilians.

...

Maniac

Character: Civilian

Wakes up at night and kills indiscriminately — both Civilians and Mafia. There is no saving from him.

At the same time, he is considered a Civilian and statistically plays in favor of the Civilians. By reducing the number of Mafia members, he increases his own chances of survival, and therefore can dramatically shift the course of the game.

Goal: Personal victory — eliminate everyone. See “Rules” for details.

...

Witness

Character: Civilian

The Witness provides an alibi and is a more respectable version of the “Escort” character for games where this variant is preferred.

See “Escort” for details.
